BERGHEIM , along the Alsatian Wine Route is a classic town in Alsace , France. Its fortifications, baroque fountain and market square make it a real find for wine enthusiasts ,photographers and travel enthusiasts. Bergheim dates back to Roman times.

The town holds a 4 flower ranking as a Village Fleurie (an annual prestigious competition for Flower beautification in Alsatian towns) Bergheim is a perfect place to use as home base for hikers to explore the area. Check out the town's principal wine producer Domaine Marcel Deiss. Bergheim has a local fair each year on the 2nd Sunday of August. Christmas Markets start 1st weekend of December. (11 Kilometers N. from Colmar, one of the largest towns in Alsace.)

KINTZHEIM (Alsace, France) was existent way back in the Merovingian time (450-987). It was a huge royal preserve with a Castle. This castle was first destroyed in 1298 by the powerful troops of the Bishop of Strasbourg. This Castle was again whacked by Swedish troops in 1632. What remains of this ancient beat up castle is used today as a preserve and also a site for shows using birds of prey like falcons. At the foot of the mountain where Kintzheim is located, lies La Montagne where visitors can watch monkeys roam free in the park. ANDLAU The Alsatian Wine Town of Andlau was founded as a royal Abbey in 880 by Saint Richarde, the wife of Charles the Fat. The Abbaye d' Andlau was consecrated in 1049 and holds the richest ensemble of Romanesque sculpture in all of Alsace France. Legend has it that a bear appeared with her baby cub as a divine sign to show St. Richarde where she should build her Abbaye. For centuries, a bear was kept in the crypt of the Church to ward off evil and as a special sign of Gods blessing for her endeavor. Legend also has it that the skull of Lazarus is entombed within the Crypt of the Church. Historians say this is not Christ's friend Lazarus skull but rather an 8th Century Bishop Lazarus of Cyprus. Andlau is an Alsatian town that holds its weekly market on Wednesday. The town celebrates with a fair the last Sunday of June or the 1st Sunday of July. "No, surely not" the cries go up.....
The subject came up while I was talking with a friend last week, both of us trying to lay it on thick about how romantic we were towards our respective wives.

Thing is, it will soon be our wedding anniversary and the plans are in operation to partake in a "second honeymoon", as a surprise for my wife.

My friend told me how he had set up a similar thing a while ago and he recommended that I take a look at this "Great Holiday Site" as he so rightly called it.

I followed his advice and was pleasantly surprised at the great deals on offer. Just about every base is covered on this site when it comes to Romantic, get away from it all breaks.

Problem number one .....Which location do we choose when presented with such a selection?
My first reaction was to go for St Lucia where wew had visited many years ago and had a great time.

Maybe, but then I saw Mauritius, a place we have always dreamed of visiting, scenery which is quite out of this world. Mountain streams surrounded by lush greenery and fantastic beaches might just tip the balance.

Visitors from Ireland last week to La Soumaille reluctantly left after a totally peaceful and relaxing week. Coreen, the lady of the household was telling us of the great deals to be had from Dublin Airport Hotels.
The family were able to securely leave their car in a secure parking area and stay at a Dublin Hotel overnight.

Chambery, located in the heart of the French Alps is the once capital of Savoie. It sits just near Lac du Bourget (Bourget Lake), looked upon by the Alps that surround it. As Chambery is close to three national parks, Parc national de la Vanoise, Parc Naturel Régional de Chartreuse and Parc Naturel Régional du Massif des Bauges. Getting to Chambery is easy as it has a modern airport; the official name is Aéroport de Chambéry. The airport code is CMF. At the moment there are a number of ‘no thrills' airlines like Flybe and Jet2.com that have regular service to Chambery. Toulouse airport handles over five and a half million passengers per year, although the terminal has been designed with a capacity of 6.2 million passengers per year, and is the second largest freight airport after Paris. The airport terminal building covers a massive 61,000 sqm and the airport itself sits on a plot of almost 780 hectares.

How far from the truth could this assumption be? The women and children were taken to the church and the men to several barns. Within a short period of time, Oradour-sur-Glane was raised to the ground. 642 people executed and their bodies burnt leaving just 6 survivors. The youngest to suffer being just one week old.

In the trial that followed in 1953 it was found that the act was a measure of retaliation by the SS against resistance activity.

Reminders Of The Carnage Litter The Streets....

Once a typical peaceful pretty French village thriving with life, a central hub of the local communes where people would make a point to come and visit the vast array of shops and facilities, plenty of places for families to have picnics and generally enjoy themselves.

The people of Oradour-sur-Glane were well aware of the German occupation in the surrounding areas but considered themselves “distant” from the events and effects of the Second World War.

All this was to change in one fell swoop on June 10th 1944. A group of German SS soldiers were stationed at St Junien, a nearby town. They moved into Oradour on this hot June day and began to segregate the inhabitants, women and children into one group and the men into several other groups. At the time, there was nothing to suggest the forthcoming chain of events and the people assumed it was the preamble to an identity check.

Collanges la Rouge

We visited Collanges la Rouge yesterday.
It's a beautiful little village about 40 mins drive from our house in Correze
Once a well known halt on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrim route, it became known as the "Town Of 25 Towers". Dating from the XVI century, most of its buildings are constructed from deep red sandstone.

Until 1730, it remained entirely independant from the French Crown.
Collonges la Rouge has now survives mainly on tourism and agriculture. Absolutely brilliant from a photographic point of view.
